The University of Scranton field hockey team pulled off an upset of No. 17 Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday afternoon, earning a thrilling 4-3 shootout victory at Weiss Field in Scranton.

How it Happened
- Stevens got the scoring started early, earning a penalty corner just 1:04 into the game, which the Ducks converted to take an early 1-0 lead.
- With 5:38 remaining in the first period, freshman Julia Opperman sent a cross to Shana Goldsmith, who tapped in a shot to even the score at 1-1.
- In the final seconds of the quarter, Sophia Cozza scored to beat the clock and give the Ducks a 2-1 lead heading into the second frame.
- The Royals evened the score midway through the second quarter. After Natalie Ward made a save on a shot from Olivia Burdo, Goldsmith collected the rebound and scored her second goal of the game.
- Scranton came out firing in the third period, taking three shots in the opening three minutes of the frame, all of which were turned away by Ward. Neither team registered another shot on goal for the remainder of the period, sending the game into the fourth quarter tied at 2-2.
- Stevens broke the tie early in the fourth quarter, retaking the lead at 3-2 just 1:56 into the frame.
- With 5:59 remaining in the fourth quarter, senior captain Maggie Keys delivered, ripping a shot into the back of the cage from the right wing to even the score at 3-3. Stevens applied pressure late, but Scranton keeper Ruby Sorber made two late saves to send the game into overtime.
- Both teams had opportunities in the first overtime period, but each keeper made a pair of saves to keep the game tied. In the second overtime frame, Sorber made five saves to keep the Ducks off the board and send the game to a penalty shootout.
- In the shootout, Sorber stopped the first attempt from All-American Lauren Flynn, while Burdo converted her first attempt to put Scranton ahead 1-0. Sorber made a pair of saves in the second round to deny Sophia Cozza, followed by a successful attempt from senior Kelly Mack. In the third round, Sorber came through once more with her third straight stop, and Keys converted the decisive attempt to seal the win for the Royals.
