Michael Hofmeister was hired as the University’s head men’s lacrosse coach on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017. In his first seven seasons at Scranton, he has led the Royals to 78 wins, three Landmark Conference titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Scranton captured its third straight Landmark Conference title with a 10-6 win over Elizabethtown and followed that up with an NCAA Tournament game win for the second straight year as the Royals soundly defeated Immaculata 20-8 in the first round. Senior defender Zachariah Palinkas earned Landmark Conference Defensive Player of the year and garnered USILA All-American honors.
2024 saw the Royals capture a second consecutive Landmark Conference title with a decisive 17-6 victory over Elizabethtown in the Landmark title game and the program's first NCAA Tournament victory with a 10-9 overtime win against John Carroll. Both senior attacker Matthew McAree and graduate student defender Colin Pierce garnered USILA All-American honors.
Scranton toppled Elizabethtown in a 13-12 thriller to capture the second Landmark title in program history in 2023 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Royals posted a single-season record 14 victories and saw seven players earn All-Conference honors including senior Christopher Crapanzano who went on to become the second two-time USILA All-American in program history.
In 2022, the Royals won seven of their final eight down the stretch to earn the No. 3 seed in the Landmark Conference Tournament and posted a 5-2 mark in league play. Scranton was a force to be reckoned with offensively as they scored 15 or more goals on eight different occasions including a program-record tying 28 goals in a 28-3 victory over Goucher. Six Royals went on to earn All-Landmark honors and Crapanzano garnered USILA Honorable Mention All-American accolades.
The 2021 season saw Hofmeister earn Landmark Conference Coach of the Year accolades after leading the Royals to five victories and a spot back in the Landmark Conference semifinals. Throughout the year, the Royals knocked off Elizabethtown for the first time since the 2014 season and collected a dominating Landmark Conference playoff victory over Drew at home (22-1) to move into the conference semifinals.
In 2021, Hofmeister coached five student-athletes to All-Landmark Conference accolades, as senior Collin Purdy was named to the USILA Division III All-American team as an honorable mention choice.
Although the 2020 season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hofmeister had navigated the Royals through a challenging early slate that featured five of their six games away from Scranton. The team also put up valliant efforts against tough opponents such as RPI, Montclair State, and nationally-ranked Cortland (all on the road).
In 2019, Hofmeister guided Scranton to a 10-8 overall record including a 5-1 mark in conference action. The Royals secured the #2 seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs and a home semifinal contest after suffering the only conference loss during the regular season to eventual league champion Elizabethtown. Following the season, five Royals collected All-Landmark Conference honors highlighted by junior midfielder Michael Elefonte, who was named the Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Year before being honored as an IMLCA All-South Region Honorable Mention selection and a USILA Honorable Mention All-American.
During his first season at Scranton in 2018, Hofmeister led the Royals to a 10-7 record and a Landmark Conference playoff appearance. The Royals went 4-2 in conference games during the regular season before dropping a 13-7 decision to top-seeded Susquehanna in the conference semifinals. Scranton placed seven players earned All-Landmark Conference honors while seniors Conor Carey, Adam Drury, and Adam Maiale earned All-South Region accolades from the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Association.
Hofmeister came to Scranton after spending the previous six seasons as an assistant at two of the top programs in the region. He spent the 2017 season as an assistant at Roanoke, helping the Maroons go 12-4 and finish tied for first in the regular season in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Prior to that, he was an assistant at York (Pa.) for five seasons, where he helped the Spartans go a combined 66-29 and win the Capital Athletic Conference title in 2016.
A 2010 graduate of Eastern University where he was a team captain and an all-conference selection on the lacrosse field, Hofmeister has extensive experience both on and off the field. At Roanoke, he ran the team’s office and man-up units as the Maroons averaged 15.88 goals per game last season. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and helped prepare scouting reports for each opponent.
During his time at York, Hofmeister worked with the offense on a daily basis and ran the substitution box during games. He was also instrumental in recruiting, scouting, practice planning and alumni and parent relations.
In 2017 at Roanoke, Hofmeister was part of a program that produced five United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-Americans, one USILA Scholar All-American, one North/South All-Star, 11 all-ODAC players and the ODAC Rookie of the Year. The Maroons also spent eight weeks ranked in the top 20, climbing as high as 15th at one point.
In his five seasons at York, Hofmeister helped the Spartans go from 9-7 in his first season to 18-4 and a CAC championship by 2016, a season that included a trip to the NCAA quarterfinals, eight wins against nationally ranked opponents and a school record for wins in a season.
During Hofmeister’s time there, York advanced to the CAC semifinals each season and had four of its six winningest seasons in program history, its first two NCAA Tournament appearance and its first NCAA Tournament victory. He coached the CAC Rookie of the Year three times as well as 11 All-Americans, five USILA Scholar All-Americans, five North/South All-Stars, one CAC Player of the Year, one CAC Scholar Athlete of the Year and 24 all-CAC honorees.
He has extensive experience as a coach and presenter at numerous lacrosse camps and was the director of the Nike Lacrosse Offense Defense Challenge Camp in Texas and Virginia in 2017.
