Jack Rubano was hired as head coach of the men's tennis program in the fall of 2014 as the seventh head coach in team history and completed his 10th season at the helm of the program in 2024.
In his seven seasons at Scranton, Rubano has led the Royals to a 70-81 (.464) overall record including a 41-26 (.612) mark against Landmark Conference opponents. Scranton has qualified for the Landmark Conference playoffs in seven of his 10 seasons as the team's head coach and has finished runners-up in the Landmark in the last three Championships that were contested by the conference in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Scranton qualified for the Landmark Conference semifinals in both 2022 and 2023 as James Harrington earned Landmark Player of the Year honors in 2022 and was named as a First Team selection in singles and doubles play in both seasons.
In the 2021, the Royals put together a strong season after having their 2020 spring campaign canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rubano led Scranton to an 8-3 overall mark (6-2 in the Landmark) and a thrilling 5-4 win over Goucher in the Landmark semfinals. He also coached Tarquin McGurrin to Landmark Player of the Year accolades, as the graduate student also earned All-Landmark First Team accolades in singles and doubles.
The 2018-19 season saw the Royals finish with a 11-8 overall mark and a 5-2 ledger in the Landmark Conference. For the second straight year, Scranton won a conference playoff match, besting Juniata, 5-0, at home to move onto the Landmark Championship match. Four student-athletes nabbed All-Landmark Conference accolades at the end of the season, led by McGurrin and Alexander Ochalski, who both earned All-Landmark First Team accolades in singles and doubles.
In the 2017-18 season, Rubano guided the Royals to a 13-4 overall record and the team went 6-1 in Landmark Conference play for the second year in a row. Scranton earned the #2 seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs and advanced to the championship match with a 5-2 victory over Juniata in the semifinals. The Royals would fall to Goucher in the championship match, 5-2, to end a strong season.
Following the season, freshman Tarquin McGurrin was named First Team All-Conference in both singles and doubles while senior Keller McGurrin was selected First Team in doubles and Second Team and singles.
Rubano led the Royals to a banner season in 2016-17, as he was named the Landmark Conference's Coach of the Year after leading Scranton to a 6-1 mark in conference action. During the course of the year, Rubano led the Royals to victories in their first six Landmark matches in the regular season, marking the best start for the Royals in Landmark play since joining the conference in 2007-08.
Individually, four Royals were named to the All-Landmark Conference Team, with Keller McGurrin and Ochalski taking First Team honors in both singles and doubles. Scranton also hosted a Landmark Conference playoff match in 2017, the first time they had done so since 2013.
In 2015-16, Rubano led the Royals back to the Landmark Conference playoffs in his second year at the helm of the program, as Scranton finished the regular season with a 5-3 mark in Landmark matches (8-10 overall). The Royals also rattled off a six-match winning streak in the middle portion of the Spring season, as freshman Charles Swope earned individual All-Landmark Conference Second Team honors.
In his first season with the Royals, he guided the team to a 5-10 record, including 3-5 in Landmark Conference play, one victory shy of a playoff appearance. He mentored McGurrin, who earned All-Landmark Conference second-team honors in his first season in the program.

Rubano studied for five semesters at The University of Scranton from 1994 to 1996 and was a member of the basketball program during that time, first with the JV team, then joining the varsity squad late in his sophomore season.
Rubano most recently served as the head varsity boys tennis coach at Devon Prep Academy in Devon, Pa. from March 2010 until July 2014. Prior to that, he was the head varsity boys tennis coach at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, Pa. from March 2006 through June 2009.
From November 2007 to August 2009, Rubano served as the head women's tennis coach at Rosemont College in Rosemont, Pa, an NCAA Division III institution that competes in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Rubano, who also served as head varsity girls tennis coach at Merion Mercy Academy in Merion Staton, Pa. from August 2001 to July 2007, is currently a theology teacher at Holy Redeemer High School in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He also has nine years of experience from 2001 to 2009 working as a summer tennis instructor and program leader at the Julian Krinsky School of Tennis in Haverford, Pa.
After studying at The University of Scranton, Rubano went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. in May 1998. While there, he also spent two years on the basketball team. He later earned a master of science in education from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia in May 2000. He has 14 years of teaching experience in grades 5 through 12.

Jack and his wife, Megan, a second grade teacher at Our Lady of Peace School in Clarks Green, reside in Waverly.
