SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton men's and women's tennis teams evened their records at 1-1 by downing Lycoming College Sunday afternoon at the Poly Hi Tennis Courts.
Behind two wins apiece from senior captain Carl Caceres (Teaneck, N.J./Bergen Catholic), sophomores Tim McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory), Joe Morra (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory) and Mike Pannone (Maplewood, N.J./Seton Hall Preparatory), and freshman David Teres (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon), the Royals blanked the Warriors, 9-0.
Seniors Danielle Wylie (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and Caitlin Ehly (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and first-year players Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) were double-winners as the Scranton women posted an 8-1 victory.
Caceres posted his 48th career victory in singles by downing Jason Mifsud at three, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, and earned his 41st career win in doubles by teaming with Morra to defeat David and Robert Brown, 8-2, at two. McGurrin, now 3-1 on the season in singles, earned his 17th career win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Robert Brown at one. He and Teres also defeated Alex Beattie/Mifsud, 8-2, at one doubles. Morra and Teres also improved to 3-1 on the year in singles by downing David Brown, 6-2, 6-2, and Beattie, 6-0, 6-2, at four and two, respectively.
Pannone evened his singles record at 2-2 by downing Cody Heffner, 6-1, 6-1, at six, after teaming with sophomore Bennett Kelley (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) to notch an 8-4 win over Heffner and Phillip Shannon at the three doubles. Sophomore Jonathan Russo (Madison, N.J./Madison) earned his first win of the season by defeating Shannon, 6-1, 6-4, at the five singles.
Wylie's win—a 7-6 (13-11), 6-1, victory over Rebecca Reynolds at four—was her first of the season and the 26th of her career. Boccuzzi, Cohen, senior Kelly Costello (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional) and Ehly joined Wylie as first-time winners this year. Boccuzzi downed Megan Gardner at one, 6-1, 6-0; Cohen stopped Linda Fogg at three, 6-0, 6-0; Costello topped Phillips at five, 6-3, 6-4; and Ehly outlasted Jacobs, 6-3, 6-3, at six.
The Royal women opened up a 3-0 lead after doubles competition, as Boccuzzi and Cohen defeated Akashi and Gardner, 9-7, at one; Wylie and junior Elisha Connell (Orangeburg, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) downed Fogg and Reynold, 8-3, at two; and Ehly and sophomore Lindsay Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) topped Jacobs and Rivera, 8-5, at three.
Today's matches were the season opener for both Lycoming teams.
