SCRANTON, Pa.—Behind two wins apiece from seniors Amie Leonard (Sparta, N.J./Pope John Paul XXIII) and Brittany Reyes (Westfield, N.J./Westfield), junior Carolyn Gillespie (New Market, Md./Linganore) and first-year swimmer Sara Franciscovich (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson), the University of Scranton ended the dual-meet portion of its season with a 163-85 victory over Drew University Saturday afternoon at the Byron Center.
The Royals also swept the relay events to improve to 8-4 on the year.
Leonard won the 100 (1:10.65) and 200 (2:35.42) breaststroke, Reyes captured the 200 butterfly (2:22.48) and the 200 individual medley (2:21.92), Gillespie finished first in the 50 free (:25.05) and the 100 fly (:59.74), and Franciscovich swept the 100 (1:05.07) and the 200 (2:21.18) backstroke.
Leonard and Reyes joined junior Christine Gorge (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and first-year swimmer Jessica Merino (N. Hyde Park, N.Y./Holy Trinity Diocesan) in winning the first event of the afternoon, the 200 medley relay in 1:57.13, while Franciscovich, Merino, Gillespie and first-year swimmer Kelsy McAnelly (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) won the final event, the 200 free in 1:43.18.
The Royals also received a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:37.15) by junior Jillian McGowan (Port Chester, N.Y./School of the Holy Child) and runner-up finishes from Gorge in the 100 back (1:05.63), Reyes in the 100 free (:58.61), sophomore Jenny Fitzmaurice (Milford, Conn./Our Lady of Mercy) in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.55) and senior Allison Sampson (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) in the 200 fly (2:23.21).
Scranton's 200 medley relay team of sophomore Maggie Beyer (Highland Mills, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury), Fitzmaurice, senior Brianna McArdle (Philadelphia, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and sophomore Victoria Meyer (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) finished second in 2:01.34.
The Royals have now posted 25 winning seasons since the program was founded in 1986.
Scranton will compete in the Landmark Conference championships on Friday, February 11, through Sunday, February 13, at the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. The Royals are three-time defending champions.
