SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton men’s
lacrosse team built up a 5-1 first-period lead before holding off a
late rally to defeat Marywood University, 9-7, at Pacer Field
Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore attacker Will
Mahle (Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery) and senior attacker
Kevin Brier (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks
West) scored two goals apiece and senior midfielder Dillon
McInerney (Hawthorne, NJ/Bergen Catholic) had a goal and three
assists as the Royals won their second straight game to improve to
3-3.
Marywood, which fell to 1-5, was led by junior attacker Riley Dobel
(Oak Bluff, Mass./Martha Vineyard’s Regional) with five goals
and sophomore attacker Dylan Swope (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts)
contributed a goal and two assists.
The Royals led by four at intermission and appeared to have the
game in hand when Mahle scored to open the third period on a play
set up by junior midfielder John
Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph’s) to take an
8-3 lead.
Dobel then added back-to-back goals, one with 8:46 left in the
third period and another with 11:35 remaining in the fourth period,
to slice Scranton’s lead to three.
The Pacers were then whistled for a costly penalty, which the
Royals converted into a goal by senior Taylor Nelson (Chester Spring, Pa/Downingtown
East), before Dobel scored twice, the last of which came
with 37 seconds remaining to set the final score.
Sophomore Matt
Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) won 11 of
17 face-offs and senior goalkeeper Ben
Worthington (Jenkintown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) finished
with 13 saves for Scranton, which now leads the all-time series
with Marywood, 6-0.
Senior long-stick midfielder Tim
Cleary (Shrewsbury, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy)
finished with four ground balls and a caused turnover and Gregitis,
freshman midfielder Alex
Mikrut (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) and junior
attacker Gus Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conastoga) added
a goal for the Royals.
Senior goalkeeper Nicholas Cornella (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) finished
with 13 saves for the Pacers.
The Royals will return to action this Wednesday, March 20,
against Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey, beginning at
3:00 p.m.
