BETHLEHEM, Pa.—The University of Scranton women’s
tennis team failed to hang on to a 2-1 lead after doubles
competition and lost a 5-4 decision to Moravian College in Landmark
Conference action Wednesday.
After lightening was spotted in the area, the final match of the
day was moved indoors, with Moravian’s Brittany Hodge
overcoming a 6-2 loss in the first set to take the next two, 6-4,
6-4, against Royal sophomore Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) for
the match-deciding point.
Sophomore Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, NY/Kings
Park) won two matches for Scranton today, teaming with
senior captain Lindsay Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Ryan)
to defeated Courtnie Lambert and Olivia Sonnabend at the number
three doubles, 8-4, before defeating Lambert, 6-2, 6-2, at the
number five singles. Lanciotti is now 4-2 in singles and 3-1
in doubles this year.
Mahaffey and fellow sophomore doubles’ partner Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame)
improved to their team-leading record to 6-1 on the season with an
8-5 win over Hodge and Katike Zien at the number two spot in the
lineup.
Royal freshman Emily
Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) won her
fifth straight match in singles and improved to 6-4 on the year
with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Eric Venuti at the number three
position.
The loss today drops the Royals to 4-6 overall and 2-2 in the
conference while the Lady Greyhounds move to 9-2 overall and 2-2 in
the Landmark.
Scranton will play its fourth Landmark Conference match in eight
days when it hosts Susquehanna University this Saturday, April 13,
at 1:00 p.m. at the Royal Courts on campus.
