The University of Scranton women's tennis team
couldn't overcome an early deficit after the doubles matches
and went on to lose to Wilkes University, 7-2, on Sunday afternoon
at Royal Courts at DeNaples Fields.
Wilkes (11-1) swept all three doubles matches to jump out to a
quick lead, and Scranton (5-7) wasn't able to recover. The
Royals got singles victories from sophomores Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) and
Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg,
Pa./Trinity).
Azzalina won a hard-fought match at third singles, defeating
Wilkes senior Katie Lynn (Berwick, Pa./Berwick), 6-2, 2-6, 10-5.
The win improved Azzalina to 7-5 in singles play this season.
Mahaffey cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at fifth singles over
Colonels' sophomore Ana English (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde
Lake), improving her to 6-6 in singles play this season.
Scranton is back on the courts on Wednesday, April 17, when it
hosts Misericordia at 3:30 p.m. at Royal Courts.
