SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton held off a late
charge in singles play to defeat Misericordia University, 5-4, in
non-conference action at the Royal Courts Wednesday afternoon.
The Cougars, now 9-8, won four of the six singles matches after
falling behind 3-0 after doubles to make things interesting.
Scranton, now 6-7, received two wins apiece from junior Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and
sophomore Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame).
Cohen teamed with freshman Emily
Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) to defeat
Emily Gherghel and Breanne Phillips at the number two doubles, 8-0,
before downing Cassie Foy, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Cohen is now 7-6 on
the season and 19-23 in her career in singles.
Azzalina and senior Lindsay Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Ryan)
topped Emily Boro and Emily Hullings, 8-4, at the three doubles,
while junior Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks
East) and sophomore Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity)
defeated Michelle Cameron and Foy, 8-1, to help Scranton complete
the doubles’ sweep.
Azzalina then improved her team-leading record in singles to 8-5
with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Phillips at the number three slot in the
lineup.
The Royals will host Goucher College in Landmark Conference action
this Sunday, April 21, at the Royal Courts beginning at 1:00
p.m.
