SCRANTON, Pa.—If history repeats itself, The University of
Scranton women’s tennis team has got to like its chances
entering the upcoming Landmark Conference tournament.
Today, the defending champion Royals handed Goucher College its
first conference loss, 6-3, at the Royal Courts.
And for the second straight season, Scranton will enter the
Landmark tournament as the number three seed. Last year, the
Royals went on the road and defeated Drew University, 5-3, in the
semifinals and Susquehanna University, 5-0, in the finals to win
their first-ever Landmark title and advance to the NCAA Division
III championships.
Junior Devon
Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and freshman
Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton
Preparatory) won two matches apiece for the Royals, who
end the regular season with a 7-7 overall record and a 4-2 mark in
league play. Cohen and Walsh teamed up to defeat Addie
Maxwell and Kelsey Turner, 8-6, at the number two doubles to
improve their season record to 6-5.
Cohen then won her second straight singles match and improved to
8-6 on the season and 20-23 in her career with a win over Meghan
Lee, who retired after dropping the first set 7-6 and trailing 4-1
in the second. Walsh improved to 8-5 in singles by downing
Kirsten Cianci, 6-0, 6-3.
Scranton picked up another point in doubles, as sophomore
Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame)
and seniorLindsay Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Ryan)
topped Rebecca Bell and Ryan Derham, 8-2, at three. Azzalina
and Ward are now 3-4 in doubles this year.
In singles, sophomores Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and
Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, NY/Kings
Point) defeated Kelsey Turner, 6-0, 6-0, and Hanora Baron,
6-1, 6-2, at the number five and six, respectively, picked up two
more points for the Royals.
Mahaffey is now 7-7 on the season and 15-12 in her career while
Lanciotti improved to 6-2 on the year.
The Royals will take on second-seeded Catholic University this
Wednesday, April 24, in Washington, DC, beginning at 3:30 p.m.,
while fourth-seeded Juniata College travels to Towson, Maryland, to
take on Goucher at 3:00 p.m. The winners advance to
Saturday’s championship match at the site of the highest seed
remaining in the tournament. The eventual winner of the
Landmark tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division
III championships.
Earlier this year, Catholic University defeated the Royals, 6-3,
in Washington. The results of today’s match are as
