SCRANTON, Pa.—If history repeats itself, The University of Scranton women’s tennis team has got to like its chances entering the upcoming Landmark Conference tournament.

Today, the defending champion Royals handed Goucher College its first conference loss, 6-3, at the Royal Courts.

And for the second straight season, Scranton will enter the Landmark tournament as the number three seed.  Last year, the Royals went on the road and defeated Drew University, 5-3, in the semifinals and Susquehanna University, 5-0, in the finals to win their first-ever Landmark title and advance to the NCAA Division III championships.

Junior Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and freshman Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) won two matches apiece for the Royals, who end the regular season with a 7-7 overall record and a 4-2 mark in league play.  Cohen and Walsh teamed up to defeat Addie Maxwell and Kelsey Turner, 8-6, at the number two doubles to improve their season record to 6-5.

Cohen then won her second straight singles match and improved to 8-6 on the season and 20-23 in her career with a win over Meghan Lee, who retired after dropping the first set 7-6 and trailing 4-1 in the second.  Walsh improved to 8-5 in singles by downing Kirsten Cianci, 6-0, 6-3.

Scranton picked up another point in doubles, as sophomore Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) and seniorLindsay Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) topped Rebecca Bell and Ryan Derham, 8-2, at three.  Azzalina and Ward are now 3-4 in doubles this year.

In singles, sophomores Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, NY/Kings Point) defeated Kelsey Turner, 6-0, 6-0, and Hanora Baron, 6-1, 6-2, at the number five and six, respectively, picked up two more points for the Royals.

Mahaffey is now 7-7 on the season and 15-12 in her career while Lanciotti improved to 6-2 on the year.

The Royals will take on second-seeded Catholic University this Wednesday, April 24, in Washington, DC, beginning at 3:30 p.m., while fourth-seeded Juniata College travels to Towson, Maryland, to take on Goucher at 3:00 p.m.  The winners advance to Saturday’s championship match at the site of the highest seed remaining in the tournament.  The eventual winner of the Landmark tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.
