TOWSON, Md. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team matched last season's feat by winning twice on the road in the playoffs to capture its second straight Landmark Conference title on Saturday with a 5-3 victory over Goucher College. The victory advances the Royals to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.

The Royals, who were the no. 3 seed for the second straight season, won the title by taking four of the five singles matches that were completed. Sophomores Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame), Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park) and freshman Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) earned victories to seal the championships for Scranton.

Scranton (9-7) fell behind, 2-1, after doubles play, but rallied for the win. Azzalina and senior Lindsay Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) earned the only doubles point for the Royals, prevailing 8-5 at No. 3 doubles.

Scranton then took the championship by winning four singles matches. The Royals also won four singles matches in a 6-3 victory over Goucher (12-5) in the regular season finale on Sunday, April 21.

Azzalina posted a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles while Walsh rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 4. Scranton then got a 7-5, 6-1 win from Mahaffey at No. 5 and Lanciotti cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6. Walsh's win was her 10th singles victory of the season while Azzalina and Mahaffey each posted their ninth singles wins.

Scranton reached the championship by defeating Catholic, 5-3, on the road in Wednesday's semifinal. Last year, the Royals went on the road to beat Drew in a semifinal and Susquehanna in the championship match.

The Royals will now make their second NCAA Tournament appearance when tournament begins in two weeks. Scranton made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season when it dropped a first-round match to Ithaca in Middlebury, Vt.
