SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton women’s
tennis team opened a busy week today with an 8-1 victory over Drew
University in Landmark Conference action at the Royal Courts.
Senior Lindsay Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Ryan),
sophomores Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame),
Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg,
Pa./Trinity), and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport,
NY/Kings Park), and freshman Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton
Preparatory) won two matches apiece as the defending
champion Royals improved to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the
conference.
The loss drops the Rangers to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the
Landmark.
Scranton will return to conference action tomorrow afternoon
against Moravian College in Bethlehem at 3:00 p.m. before wrapping
up its fourth league match in eight days Saturday when it host
Susquehanna University at 1:00 p.m.
Azzalina and Mahaffey improved their team-leading doubles’
record to 5-1 on the season with an 8-1 win over Sofia Madrigal and
YiYi Rodriguez at the number two spot. The Royals jumped out
to a 3-0 lead after doubles play, as junior Devon
Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and Walsh knocked
off Chelsea Lipp and Deanna Williams, 8-6, at one and Lanciotti and
Ward pulled out an 8-3 victory over Kirby Clark and Alexandria
Scarborough at three.
Azzalina and Mahaffey’s wins in singles today tie them with
Cohen for the team-lead in wins with five.
