PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's
tennis team could not carry the momentum from its first-ever NCAA
Division III Tournament victory into Saturday's second round,
falling to seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins, 5-0, at Carnegie Mellon
University.
Playing just 24 hours after defeating LaRoche College, 5-0, for
the program's first NCAA win in its 38 year history, the
Royals (10-8) ran into a talented Johns Hopkins squad that has now
won 15 straight matches and is No. 7 in the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association's NCAA Division III Top 25 poll.
The Blue Jays (19-2) swept all three doubles matches, losing
just one game in each. They then rolled to wins at first and third
singles to complete the match and move into Sunday's third
round against either Carnegie Mellon or Mary Washington, which were
playing a second-round match immediately after.
Scranton's season comes to an end after making the
program's second straight and second overall appearance in
the NCAA Tournament. The Royals have captured back-to-back Landmark
Conference championships.
The defeat also brought an end to the career of seniors
Lindsay Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop
Ryan) and Cristina Marzello (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainhedge).
Ward went 11-7 in doubles play this season, including a victory in
Friday's win over LaRoche, and 2-7 in singles. She finishes
with career marks of 4-9 in singles and 16-21 in doubles.
Marzello went 0-2 in singles this season and did not appear in a
doubles match. She finishes with career records of 1-3 in singles
and 2-0 in doubles.
