EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. – The University of Scranton
women's tennis team opened its season with an 8-1 defeat at
Wilkes University on Friday evening at the Ralston Athletic
Complex.
Junior Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) posted
the lone victory for the Royals at No. 2 singles, winning a
three-set marathon, 3-6, 6-0, 11-9 over Colonels freshman Kendra
Croker (Old Forge, Pa./Scranton Preparatory).
The loss came in the Scranton head coaching debut of Janice
Winslow, who took over the program this summer. She
joined Scranton with 199 career coaching victories after a highly
successful run as the head coach at Marywood University from 1986
to 2007.
Wilkes, which has won seven straight Freedom Conference
championships, improved to 5-0 with the victory.
Scranton will try to give Winslow her 200th career victory on
Saturday when the Royals host Lebanon Valley at 11 a.m. at Royal
Courts at DeNaples Fields.
