A pair of narrow defeats made the difference on Saturday as The University of Scranton women's tennis team lost to visiting Lebanon Valley, 6-3, at Royal Courts at DeNaples Fields.
Scranton (0-2) received singles victories from junior Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) and sophomore Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South), and a doubles victory from Azzalina and junior Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park) in the defeat.
Azzalina posted a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles while Barron was victorious at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Azzalina and Lanciotti pulled out a 9-8 win at No. 2 doubles.
Azzalina is now 2-0 in singles play this season and she now has 22 career singles victories, most on the team.
Senior Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) lost a tough three-set match at No. 1 singles, falling to Dutchmen senior Christie Graf (Willow Grove, Pa./Upper Moreland), 6-7 (7-9), 7-5, 10-6. Scranton also lost a narrow 9-7 match at No. 3 doubles.
Lebanon Valley improved to 2-0 with the victory.
Scranton returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, when the Royals travel to Oneonta State for a noon match.
