The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team scored three
goals late in the fourth period to turn a tie game into an 8-5
victory over Marywood on Tuesday night at Fitzpatrick Field.
The Royals (3-2) received a goal and two assists from senior
midfielder John Gregitis
(Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep), and two goals apiece from
senior midfielder Matt Tibbitts
(West Hartford, Conn./Conard) and freshman attacker
Brian
Quinn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh).
With the score tied at 5 midway through the fourth period, the
Royals went on the attack and Gregitis ame through with his second
goal of the game and eighth of the season with 6:35 to play. Just
less than three minutes later, sophomore midfielder Alec Mikrut
(Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) scored for a two-goal lead,
and Quinn added the final insurance goal 40 seconds later to seal
the deal.
Scranton also received a first-period goal from junior
midfielder Michael
Bernier (Wayne, Pa./Malvern Prep), and assists from
Mikrut and sophomore attacker Andrew Marone
(Morristown, N.J./Seton Hall Prep).
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicholas
McKaba (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) made seven
saves in the victory, senior defenseman Ryan Saraceni
(Lansdale, Pa./LaSalle) forced three turnovers and had
four ground balls, and junior midfielder Matt Finor
(Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) won 14 of 17
faceoffs to help the Royals stay on the attack most of the
night.
The Royals held a 35-22 edge in shots, including 12-3 in the
fourth period. They committed 16 turnovers, compared to 17 for
Marywood (2-4).
The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday evening, but was
moved up one day due to the forecast for inclement weather
tomorrow.
Scranton returns to action on Friday, March 14, when it opens
Landmark Conference play by hosting Catholic at 7 p.m. at
Fitzpatrick Field.
