WASHINGTON, D.C. – The University of Scranton baseball
team found their offensive stride in the opening game of a Landmark
Conference doubleheader against Catholic on Saturday at Talbot
Field. Unfortunately, that momentum didn't carry over in the second
game.
The Royals won the opener, 12-10, before dropping the second
game, 3-2 in nine innings, to begin Landmark Conference play.
After taking a 5-0 lead in the second inning in the opener,
Scranton (4-4, 1-1 Landmark) found itself facing a 7-6 deficit
heading into the sixth inning. That's when the Royals scored six
runs to take control to open the day with a victory.
Sophomore right fielder Zach Dignam
(Bridgewater, N.J./Immaculata) finished the opener with a
double, two singles, three runs scored and an RBI. He also made to
diving catches in right field, both of which ended innings. Junior
left fielder Michael Umerich
(Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) had two hits, two
runs and two RBIs, and junior first baseman Ross Danzig (Clarks
Green, Pa./Abington Heights/Blair Academy, N.J.) doubled
and drove in four runs.
Sophomore right-hander Kevin Williams
(Danbury, Conn./Danbury) picked up the win with 2/3
innings of relief, and junior righty Mike Villegas
(Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) pitched the final 1 2/3
innings for his third save of the year.
In the second game, the Royals scored twice in the top of the
first in a two-run double by Danzig, but that was all the offense
would muster as the Cardinals (8-5, 1-1 Landmark) pushed across a
run in the bottom of the ninth to win.
Sophomore right-hander Matt Calamoneri (Hillsborough,
N.J./Hillsborough) pitched the first eight innings and
received a no-decision after allowing two runs, both earned, on
nine hits and three walks while striking out four. Junior center
fielder Michael Gaeta
(Cranford, N.J./Cranford) had two hits and scored a run in
the loss.
The teams will wrap up the three-game series with the final game
on Sunday at Talbot Field at 11 a.m.
