SCRANTON, Pa.—Juniors Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notra Dame) and
Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg,
Pa./Trinity) and sophomore Emily
Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) each won
two matches today to lead The University of Scranton to an 8-1
victory over Clarion University in the first of a four-match Spring
Break trip Sunday.
With the win, the Royals improved to 1-3 on the season.
Azzalina teamed with freshman Emily
Machado (Fishkill, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) to defeat
Jessica Dgien and Allison Probst, 8-0, at the number three doubles,
then downed Madeline Robinson, 6-2, 6-0, at the three
singles. She is now 4-0 in singles this year and 24-10 in her
career.
Mahaffey and Walsh defeated Megan Bettwy and Jessica Kennelly, 8-3,
at the number two doubles for their first win as a doubles team
this season. Mahaffey then defeated Dgien, 6-0, 6-0, at the
five singles to improve to 1-0 on the season and 18-12 in her
career, while Walsh defeated Kennelly, 6-0, 6-1, at four to pick up
her first singles win this year and improve to 12-5 in her
career.
Also posting wins today for Scranton were seniors Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks
East) and Devon
Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and junior
Lisa-Maria Lanciotti (Northport, NY/Kings
Park).
Boccuzzi topped Lauren Zezenski, 6-4, 6-2, at the number singles
one for her first win of the season and the 11th of her career
while Cohen outlasted Megan Bettwy, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) at two for
her first victory of the year and the 22nd of her career.
Lanciotti defeated Probst, 6-0, 6-2, at six for her first win this
season.
Robinson and Zezenski picked up an 8-6 win at the number one
doubles over Boccuzzi and Cohen for Clarion’s lone
point. The loss dropped the Eagles to 2-5.
Scranton will return to action on Tuesday, March 18, against
Carroll College (Wis.) at 12:30 p.m.
