HILTON HEAD, SC—A valiant comeback fell short for The University of Scranton women’s tennis team in a 5-4 loss to Carroll University (Wis.) this afternoon.

The Royals won four of six singles matches, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a 3-0 deficit after doubles play.  The loss dropped Scranton to 1-4 while the Pioneers improved to 11-6.

Junior Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) improved to 5-0 on the season and 25-10 in her career with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Alison Lambrecht at the number three singles.

Scranton also recorded wins at the number four through six singles by sophomore Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and juniors Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, NY/Kings Park), respectively.

Walsh improved to 2-0 on the season and 13-5 in her career with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Samantha Hoyord and Mahaffey moved to 2-0 on the year and 19-12 in her career by downing Sarah Wick, 6-0, 6-0.  Lanciotti is now 2-3 this year and 10-5 in her career after stopping Margaret Schneider, 6-1, 6-1.

In an exhibition match, Royal freshman Valerie Bott (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming Area) downed Katie McCarthy, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2), for her first career win in singles.

The Royals will return to action tomorrow afternoon against Division II Bloomsburg University at 12:30 p.m. before wrapping up this four-match Spring Break trip on Friday, March 21, against FDU-Florham at 11:30 a.m.
