Women's Tennis Splits Pair Of Matches During Spring Trip

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The day started out with a tough loss for The University of Scranton women's tennis team, but the Royals rebounded on Wednesday to end the day with a victory. 

Scranton overcame a narrow 5-4 loss to Bloomsburg in the morning to dismiss Washington & Jefferson, 8-1, to end the day and improve the Royals' record to 2-5 on the season and 2-2 on the trip.

The Royals downed Washington & Jefferson by taking five of six singles matches and sweeping the doubles matches. Junior Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) and sophomore Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) each posted a pair of victories against the Presidents. 

Azzalina rolled to an 8-3 win over Grace McCarthy at second singles and teamed with junior Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park) for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Walsh earned an 8-1 victory over Courtney Brennan at No. 1 singles and teamed with junior Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) for an 8-1 win at second doubles.

Scranton also received singles wins from sophomore Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshmen Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and Dana Ranney (Morristown, N.J./Madison). Seniors Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) and Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) teamed for a win at No. 1 doubles. 

In the day's opening match against Bloomsburg, the teams split the singles matches, winning three apiece, to open the match. The match came down to the No. 2 doubles match, where the Huskies (2-3) pulled out a 9-8 (7-4) victory to take the match.

The Royals received singles wins from Walsh, Mahaffey and Lanciotti. Walsh rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles, Mahaffey won 6-0, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 5, and Lanciotti earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 6. 

In doubles action, Azzalina teamed with Machado for an 8-4 win at No. 3.

The Royals are back in action on Friday when they take on FDU-Florham at 10:30 a.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
