HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The University of Scranton men's tennis team built an early lead after doubles play, but Springfield College rallied to win four singles matches to hand the Royals a 5-4 defeat on Thursday at Chaplin Park during the team's spring break trip.
Scranton (1-2) took a 2-1 lead after doubles play after senior David Teres (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) and freshman Matt Prendergrast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) earned a 9-8 (7-4) win at No. 1 singles, and sophomores Kevin Murphy (Greenbelt, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) and Michael O'Malley (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) secured an 8-5 win at No. 3 singles.
But Springfield (5-2) rallied to win the top four singles matches to pull out the win. Scranton also received singles victories from senior James Dalkiewicz (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman) and junior Ryan Bair (Leola, Pa./Lancaster Catholic). Dalkiewicz picked up a 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 10-1 victory at No. 6 singles, while Bair earned a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
The Royals will wrap up their spring break trip when they face FDU-Florham on Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Hilton Head, S.C.
