HILTON HEAD, SC—The University of Scranton women's tennis
team ended a five-match Spring Break trip today with a 9-0 victory
over FDU-Florham.
The Royals, now 3-5, received two wins apiece from juniors
Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg,
Pa./Trinity) and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, NY/Kings
Park).
Mahaffey teamed with sophomore Emily
Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) to record
an 8-1 victory over Megan Scherer and Jenna Cowie at the number one
doubles, then downed Kim Martin, 6-0, 6-0, in the number three
singles. She is now 4-0 in singles this year and 21-12 in her
career.
After losing her first three singles matches, Lanciotti has now
won four straight, including today’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Megan
Hintz, and is now 12-5 in her career. She teamed with fellow
junior Megan Azzalina
(Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) to post an 8-0 victory over Kim Martin and
Megan Heintz at the number two doubles.
Freshman Dana Ranney (Morristown,
NJ/Madison) and sophomoreCourtney Barron (New City, NY/Clarkstown
South) also picked up a win in doubles, turning back
Tenzin Lama and Murphy Sieg, 8-1, at three.
Seniors Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks
East) and Devon
Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) down Megan
Scherer, 6-0, 7-5, and Cowie, 6-3, 6-4, at the one and two singles,
respectively, while freshmen Emily
Machado (Fishkill, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Valerie Bott (West Pittston, Pa./Wyoming
Area) defeated Lama, 6-1, 6-0, and Jennifer Epstein,
6-1, 6-0, at five and six.
The Royals will take on Goucher College in their Landmark
Conference opener this Sunday, March 23, beginning at 1:00 p.m. in
Towson, Maryland, weather permitting.
