TOWSON, Md. – The two-time defending Landmark Conference champion University of Scranton women's tennis team opened conference play on Sunday with a 7-2 victory over Goucher.
The Royals (4-5, 1-0 Landmark) received two wins apiece from juniors Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame), Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park), as well as sophomore Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep). Scranton took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, then won five of six singles matches to secure the victory.
Walsh and Mahaffey teamed for an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles to get the Royals on the board, and Azzalina and Lanciotti earned an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles.
Azzalina then rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, Walsh picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles, Mahaffey earned a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles, and Lanciotti posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Scranton also received a 6-1, 6-0 victory from senior Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) at No. 2 singles.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday, March 26, when they travel to Elizabethtown, Pa. to take on Elizabethtown at 3:30 p.m.
