WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—The University of Scranton men’s
lacrosse team set the tone early in Saturday’s 12-5 victory
over Lycoming College in non-conference action Saturday
afternoon.
Behind two goals apiece from sophomore Alec
Mikrut (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) and freshman
Ryan Mygatt (Bridgewater,
NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), the Royals built up a 7-1 lead by
intermission. Scranton out-shot the Warriors, 20-6, and won
of 9 of 12 face-offs in the opening 30 minutes of play.
Mikrut finished with three goals and an assist, senior Gus
Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) added two goals, and
senior John
Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph’s Preparatory)
had a goal and three assists as the Royals improved to 2-2.
Lycoming, which fell to 0-4, was led by senior Matt McCaffer
(Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) with three goals and juniors Sean Reilly
(Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) and Thomas Hanson (Tucson,
Ariz./Catanlina Foothills) added one apiece.
The Royals dominated the game in all phases, winning 17 of 20
face-offs—including a 9-for-12 effort by junior Matt
Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South)—and
holding a 39-21 advantage in shots and 38-23 margin in ground
balls.
McCaffer and Hanson opened the third period with goals during a
two-minute span to cut Scranton’s lead to four midway before
Scranton closed it out with goals by sophomore Brad Elkin (West
Chester, Pa./Malverne Preparatory) and Mikrut on a man-up
opportunity to take a 9-3 lead entering the final period of
play.
The Royals put it out of reach on goals by Sturm and sophomores
Andrew Marone (Morristown, NJ/Seton Hall
Preparatory), and Nick
Mullery (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) to open the
fourth period to extend the lead to nine.
Freshman Brian
Quinn (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) finished with two assists
for Scranton, which will return to action this Wednesday, March 12,
against Marywood University beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick
Field. Admission is free.
