The University of Scranton women's tennis team has won back-to-back Landmark Conference titles by winning playoff matches on the road. If the Royals are going to win a third straight title this year, they'll have the added benefit of playing their playoff matches at home.
Scranton secured the top seed in the Landmark Conference playoffs with a 6-3 victory over Catholic on Saturday at Royal Courts. The Royals (8-6, 5-0 Landmark) have now won three straight matches and seven of eight, and hold a one-game lead and the tie-breaker over Moravian with only one match remaining.
Junior Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and sophomore Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) both posted a pair of victories to lead the way. Walsh earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles after teaming with senior Devon Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. Mahaffey rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles after helping senior Stephanie Boccuzzi (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) in an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Walsh is now a perfect 10-0 in singles play this season while Mahaffey is close behind at 9-1.
Scranton also received singles victories from juniors Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame), who earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park), who picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6. Azzalina improved to 10-3 in singles play while Lanciotti is 9-4.
Prior to the match, the Royals honored Boccuzzi and Cohen for their four years with the program.
Scranton will complete its regular season on Thursday, April 17, when it travels to Selinsgrove, Pa. to take on Susquehanna in a Landmark Conference match at 1 p.m.
