MOOSIC, Pa. – The University of Scranton baseball team
fell into an early hole that it could not dig out of and suffered a
17-7 loss to Misericordia on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field.
The game was part of the Bill Howerton Strikeout Cancer Weekend,
in memory of former Royals head coach Bill Howerton, who passed
away in August 2012 after battling cancer.
After the teams traded runs in the first inning, Misericordia
(14-8) scored five times in the second for a 6-1 lead. The Cougars
then broke open an 8-3 game with eight runs in the top of the
fifth.
Scranton (7-7) was led by sophomore Kyle Hamer
(Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.), who singled
twice and drove in two. Senior second baseman Matt Maghini
(Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and junior outfielder
Nick
Papillo (Germantown, Md./St. John's College H.S.) both
had two hits and scored twice.
The Royals return to action on Tuesday when they host Merchant
Marine Academy in a Landmark Conference game at 3:30 p.m. at
Connell Park.
