ANNVILLE, Pa. – Seniors Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame), Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park), and freshman Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) posted two wins apiece as The University of Scranton women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 win at Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
The Royals didn't drop a set in the match, sweeping all three doubles matches and winning five singles matches in straight sets. The lone Dutchmen victory came at No. 1 singles when sophomore Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) retired after winning the first set for Scranton.
Scranton jumped out 3-0 after doubles play when Walsh and Azzalina posted an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles, Mahaffey and Frattaroli rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 2, and Lanciotti teamed with freshman Maura Tyrrell (Chester, N.Y./Academy of St. Elizabeth) for an 8-6 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Azzalina earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 while Mahaffey picked up a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3. Lanciotti cruised to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4, Frattaroli had a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5, and sophomore Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) secured a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6.
The victory was the first for Scranton against Lebanon Valley. The Royals had previously been 0-5 against the Dutchmen in a series that dates back to 2008.
Scranton returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 30, when the Royals host Marywood at 7 p.m. at Royal Courts.
