GENEVA, NY—Four members of The University of Scranton women's tennis team competed in the USTA/ITA regional championships today at William Smith College in upstate New York.
Senior Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) and junior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) each split a pair of matches in singles competition, while junior Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and freshman Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) did the same in doubles.
Azzalina dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Brittany Grandville of New Paltz in her opening round match before coming back to turn back Lauren Bohman of Brockport, 8-4, in a consolation match. Walsh also lost her opening round match, falling to Kirsten Ackerman of The Sage Colleges, but bounced back to Olivia Ammirati of New Paltz, 8-4. Azzalina is now 4-1 on the season while Walsh is 3-2.
Mahaffey and Frattaroli won their opening round match, defeating Erin Duffy and Kirsten Ackerman of The Sage Colleges, 8-5, but lost 8-0 in the next round to Yumi Karlshoej and Zoe Valella of Skidmore.
