HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team got off to a fast start by winning all three doubles matches in the Royals' 7-2 victory over Ramapo on Monday at the Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort.
Scranton (4-1) got a pair of wins each from seniors Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame), Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park), as well as sophomore Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes).
Mahaffey teamed with freshman Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) to get Scranton off to a strong start with an 8-1 win at no. 1 doubles. Azzalina and junior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) also posted an 8-1 win at no. 2 doubles, and Lanciotti and Machado hung on for a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.
Azzalina rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, Mahaffey won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, Machado was a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) winner at No. 4, and Lanciotti posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
Azzalina now has 38 career victories in both singles and doubles, while Mahaffey has 33 singles victories and 32 doubles wins.
Scranton returns to action on Tuesday when the Royals face Lenoir-Rhyne at 8 a.m.
