SCRANTON, Pa.— Senior midfielder Will Mahle (Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery) scored two goals and senior attackman Anthony Lombardo (Mendham, NJ/Mendham) finished with a goal and two assists to lead The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team to a 6-3 victory over Marywood University Wednesday evening at Pacer Field.
The Royals also received a goal from sophomore midfielder John Sheridan (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) and sophomoreJake Haimson (Montville, NJ/Montville), an assist from junior midfielder Josh Kasman (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), and junior goalkeeper Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris) made nine saves. Scranton, now 1-3, out-shot the Pacers, 38-18, and held a 22-14 advantage in ground balls.
Senior midfielders Brandon Terlizzi (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Sam Trill (Woolwich Township, NJ/Kingsway Regional) and junior attackman Scott Slater (Cicero, NY/Cicero-North) scored a goal apiece and senior attackman Dylan Swope (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) had two assists for Marywood, now 1-2.
After a scoreless first period, the Royals took the lead on a goal by Mahle set up by Lombardo with 13:29 remaining before halftime. The Pacers tied it up on Terlizzi’s sixth goal of the season, unassisted, at the 8:43 mark before Scranton regained the lead for good on back-to-back goals by Sheridan and Lombardo. Mullery capped off a 3-1 run with a pair of goals to give Scranton a 5-2 lead with 8:31 left in the fourth period.
Trill cut Scranton’s lead to two moments later before Mahle converted an extra-man opportunity into an insurance goal to set the final score with 39 seconds left.
The Royals are now 8-0 lifetime against Marywood.
Scranton returns to action this Saturday, March 7, against the Colonials of Western Connecticut State University at 12:00 noon at Fitzpatrick Field.
