SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton men’s tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak Wednesday by blanking Susquehanna University, 9-0, in Landmark Conference action at the Royal Courts.
The Royals received two wins apiece from senior Ryan Bair (Leola, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), sophomores Matt Prendergast (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive) and Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area), and freshman Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) to improve to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The loss dropped the Crusaders to 0-8 overall and 0-3 in the Landmark.
Bair downed Chib Onwunaka in the number five singles, 6-0, 6-0, to pick up his team-leading fourth victory of the season and the 11th of his career. He also teamed with McGurrin for the first time and downed Ryan VanValin and Matthew Weller, 8-2, for his second doubles victory this year.
McGurrin picked up his third win in singles, stopping VanValin, 6-0, 6-0, in the number one slot and Prendergast and Pottieger earned their second wins by downing Weller, 6-0, 6-0, and Andrew Parrish, 6-1, 6-0, at two and three, respectively.
Also picking up wins for the Royals today were junior Kevin Murphy (Greenbelt, Md./Gonzaga College High School) and sophomore David Commender (Larchmont, NY/Iona Preparatory) in singles and senior Kevin Prendergast (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive) and junior Michael O’Malley (Middletown, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) in doubles.
The Royals will return to Landmark Conference action this Saturday, April 4, against the Cardinals of Catholic University at the Royal Courts beginning at 1:00 p.m.
