Senior Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) became the University of Scranton women's tennis program's all-time leader in doubles victories as the Royals defeated Susquehanna, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Royal Courts.
Azzalina teamed with fellow senior Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) for an 8-1 win at no. 2 doubles, giving Azzalina her 40th career doubles victory. She passes Danielle Schneider, who had 39 doubles victories from 1997-2000.
Azzalina, Mahaffey and sophomore Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) each posted singles and doubles victories on the day, and Scranton also received singles victories from senior Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park), junior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) and freshman Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) while improving to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in Landmark Conference play.
Mahaffey cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 win at no. 3 singles, while Azzalina finished right behind her with a 6-3, 6-0 win at no. 2, also earning her 40th singles win of her career. Machado partnered with fellow sophomore Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) for an 8-3 win at no. 3 doubles, then posted a 6-4, 6-1 victory at no. 6 singles.
Lanciotti was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at no. 5 singles, Walsh won 6-1, 6-3 at no. 1 singles, and Frattaroli picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win at no. 4 singles.
The Royals are back in action on Monday, April 6, when they host Catholic University at 1 p.m. at Royal Courts.
