BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team continued its strong play this spring with a 7-2 victory at Moravian on Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-0 in Landmark Conference play.
The Royals (8-2, 4-0 Landmark) received two wins each from seniors Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) and Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) and junior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) en route to the victory.
Azzalina and Mahaffey pulled out a 9-7 victory at no. 2 doubles to improve to 4-0 in conference doubles action this season. The win was the 42nd career doubles win for Azzalina, extending her school record, while Mahaffey picked up her 36th career doubles win, third-most in Royals history.
Azzalina then went out and posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory at no. 2 singles, also her 42nd career singles victory, which ranks her third in school history. She is 10-4 overall on the season and 4-0 in conference play.
Mahaffey was right behind her with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at no. 3 singles, giving her 37 career singles victories, tied for sixth in school history. She improves to 4-0 in conference play and 8-2 on the season.
Walsh was not to be outdone by her senior teammates, teaming with freshman Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) for an 8-5 victory at no. 1 doubles, improving the duo to 3-1 in conference action this season. Walsh now has 27 career doubles wins, tied for 12th in Royals history. She added a 6-4, 6-3 win at no. 1 singles, her 33rd career singles win, also 12th in program history. She is 9-6 on the season and 4-0 in conference action.
Scranton also received singles victories from senior Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park) and sophomore Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes). Lanciotti posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at no. 5 singles to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play this season. Machado rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-3) win at no. 6 singles, her fifth win and second in conference play this season.
The Royals are right back on the courts on Sunday when they travel to Madison, N.J. to take on Drew in a Landmark Conference match at 1 p.m.
