MADISON, N.J. – Senior Ryan Bair (Leola, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) and sophomores Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) and Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) each posted singles and doubles victories to spark The University of Scranton men's tennis team to an 8-1 victory at Drew on Sunday.
Scranton (3-6, 2-3 Landmark) stayed in the hunt for a playoff spot with the victory. The Royals are tied for fifth with three matches remaining.
Bair teamed with freshman Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) to pull out a 9-8 (8-6) victory as Scranton swept all three doubles matches. He then went out and posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at no. 5 singles.
Prendergast and Pottieger teamed up to post an 8-4 win at no. 2 doubles. Prendergast later earned a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win at no. 2 singles. Pottieger took a 7-5, 6-3 decision at no. 4 singles.
The Royals also received singles wins from junior Kevin Murphy (Greenbelt, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.), who was a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 winner at no. 3 singles, and sophomore David Commender (Larchmont, N.Y./Iona Prep), who improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play with a 6-3, 6-0 win at no. 6 singles.
The team of senior Kevin Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) and junior Michael O'Malley (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) also delivered an 8-2 win at no. 3 doubles.
Scranton is back in action on Thursday, April 16, when the Royals host Messiah at 4 p.m. at Royal Courts.
