SOUTH ABINGTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton men's tennis team started a key three-day stretch with an 8-1 victory over Elizabethtown in a Landmark Conference match on Friday at the Birchwood Tennis & Fitness Club.
The victory keeps Scranton (4-7, 3-3 Landmark) in the hunt for a spot in the conference playoffs. The Royals are now in fifth place, a half-game out of fourth with two conference matches remaining, including a home match against Goucher on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Royal Courts.
Scranton took two of three in doubles play, then swept the singles matches in the victory. Senior Ryan Bair (Leola, Pa./Lancaster Catholic), sophomores Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) and Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area), and freshman Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) each posted singles and doubles wins.
Bair and McGurrin scored the Royals' first point of the match with an 8-1 win at no. 1 doubles, and Prendergast and Pottieger were right behind with their own 8-1 win at no. 2 doubles. Prendergast and Pottieger are now 5-2 together in doubles play, including 4-1 in conference play.
McGurrin then went out and posted a 7-5, 6-2 win at no. 1 singles. Prendergast was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at no. 2, Pottieger posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at no. 4, and Bair was a 6-0, 6-3 winner at no. 5. Bair improved to 8-5 in singles play this season, including 4-2 against conference foes.
Scranton also received a 7-5, 6-3 win from junior Kevin Murphy (Greenbelt, Md./Gonzaga College H.S.) at no. 3 singles, and a 6-2, 6-3 win from sophomore David Commender (Larchmont, N.Y./Iona Prep) at no. 6 singles. Commender is now 7-1 in singles play this season, including 5-1 in conference action.
The Royals will tune up for Sunday's key conference match by visiting King's on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
