SOUTH ABINGTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team fought until the final point, but the Royals saw their 17-match unbeaten streak against Landmark Conference foes come to an end in a 5-4 loss to Elizabethtown on Friday at the Birchwood Tennis & Fitness Club.
The Royals (9-3, 5-1 Landmark) have already clinched a playoff spot, but the loss drops them into second place behind the Blue Jays (11-3, 5-0 Landmark).
Scranton took two of three doubles matches for an early lead, but needed a win from senior Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity), 7-6 (10-8), 6-4 at no. 3 singles to even the match at four. But Elizabethtown won the final match in a third-set tiebreaker at no. 4 singles to take the match.
The Royals also received a singles victory from senior Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park), who posted a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 win at no. 5 singles. She also teamed with sophomore Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) for an 8-3 win at no. 3 doubles.
The no. 1 doubles team of Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) and Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) also had an 8-6 win for Scranton.
The Royals are in action on Saturday when they visit King's for a non-conference match at 10:30 a.m.
