WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) picked up a pair of victories to lead The University of Scranton women's tennis team to a 7-2 victory over King's in a non-conference match at Kirby Park on Saturday.
The Royals (10-3) had the benefit of a forfeit victories at no. 3 doubles and no. 6 singles while also receiving singles wins from junior Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Kayley Carnes (Montgomery, N.Y./Pine Bush).
Mahaffey was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at no. 2 singles and also teamed with freshman Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) for an 8-5 victory at no. 1 doubles. Mahaffey now has 39 career singles victories and 37 career doubles wins, which rank sixth and third, respectively, in Scranton history.
Barron earned a 6-4, 7-5 victory at no. 3 singles while Carnes scored her first career singles victory by winning 6-1, 6-2 at no. 5 singles.
The no. 2 doubles team of senior Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park) and sophomore Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) also scored an 8-0 win for Scranton.
The Royals will be back in action on Sunday when they host Goucher in a Landmark Conference match at 1 p.m. at Royal Courts. Seniors Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame), Lanciotti and Mahaffey will be honored prior to the start of the match as part of Senior Day.
