The University of Scranton women's tennis team honored its three seniors prior to Sunday's regular season finale against Goucher, then all three went out and posted singles and doubles victories in a 6-3 win.
Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame), Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park) and Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) were honored prior to the start of the match and then led the Royals (11-3, 6-1 Landmark) to the victory.
Azzalina and Mahaffey teamed for an 8-1 win at no. 2 doubles, extending Azzalina's school record for career doubles victories to 43. Mahaffey picked up her 38th career doubles win, third-most in school history.
Azzalina later earned her 43rd career singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win at no. 1 singles. Her career total is tied for second in Royals history. Mahaffey picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at no. 2 singles, her 40th career singles victory, which ranks tied for fifth in program history.
Lanciotti teamed with sophomore Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) for an 8-3 win at no. 3 doubles. She then rallied for a 5-7, 6-0, 1-0 (10-4) win at no. 3 singles, her 25th career singles victory, which is tied for 20th all-time at Scranton.
The Royals also received an 8-3 victory at no. 1 doubles from junior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) and freshman Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) in the win.
Scranton has secured the no. 2 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs and will host third-seeded Juniata in a semifinal match on Wednesday, April 29, at Royal Courts at a time to be determined.
