WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team jumped out to a lead after doubles play, but Wilkes rallied in singles action to post a 6-3 win over the Royals on Friday afternoon at Ralston Athletic Complex.
The Royals (11-4) got doubles wins from seniors Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) and Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) at no. 1 doubles, and sophomore Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and senior Lisa-Marie Lanciotti (Northport, N.Y./Kings Park) at no. 3.
Azzalina and Mahaffey posted an 8-4 victory, their sixth doubles win of the season together. The victory extended Azzalina's school record for career doubles wins to 44. Mahaffey now has 39 career doubles wins, tied for second in school history.
Machado and Lanciotti combined for an 8-6 victory of their own, also their sixth victory of the season together. Lanciotti now has 20 career doubles victories while Machado has 13.
Azzalina had the team's lone singles victory, posting a 6-1, 7-5 win at no. 1 singles. She's now 12-6 in singles play this season, matching her career high for singles wins in a season. She has 44 career singles victories, which rank second in school history.
The Royals will open Landmark Conference playoff action as the no. 2 seed and will host third-seeded Juniata on Wednesday, April 29, at 3:30 p.m. at Royal Courts.
