The University of Scranton men's tennis team got off to a good start with a pair of doubles victories on Monday, but could not carry that momentum into singles play and suffered a 6-3 loss to Catholic at Royal Courts.
Scranton (2-5, 1-2 Landmark) got doubles wins from the teams of senior Ryan Bair (Leola, Pa./Lancaster Catholic) and freshman Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) at no. 1 doubles, and sophomores Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) and Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) at no. 2.
Bair and McGurrin battled to a 9-8 (7-3) win to get the Royals off to a fast start, and when Prendergast and Pottieger followed them off the court with an 8-4 victory, Scranton had a quick 2-0 lead. But Catholic (5-6, 3-2 Landmark) won the third doubles match and five of six singles matches.
Sophomore David Commender (Larchmont, Pa./Iona Prep) gave Scranton its lone singles point with a 6-4, 6-3 win at no. 5 singles. His victory gave Scranton a 3-2 lead in the match, but the Cardinals won the remaining four singles matches.
Scranton returns to action on Wednesday when the Royals travel to Oneonta, N.Y. to face Oneonta State at 4 p.m.
