Senior Megan Azzalina (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) set a University of Scranton women's tennis record with her 40th career doubles victory in the Royals' victory over Susquehanna on Wednesday, April 1. On the heels of that record-setting win, she has been named the Landmark Conference women's tennis Athlete of the Week.
Azzalina broke the record when she teamed with fellow senior Nicole Mahaffey (Harrisburg, Pa./Trinity) for an 8-1 victory at no. 2 doubles. She passed Danielle Schneider, who had 39 doubles victories from 1997-2000.
With a 6-3, 6-0 win at no. 2 singles, Azzalina also reached 40 career victories in singles play, which ranks her tied for fourth in program history and just six behind the all-time leader, Ashlee Wydra (2002-05).
Azzalina has now won the Landmark Conference's weekly award five times in her career.
The women's tennis team is back in action today when the Royals host Catholic at 1 p.m. at Royal Courts.
