The University of Scranton continued its strong play this fall, breezing to a 9-0 win over Lebanon Valley on Sunday afternoon at Royal Courts as five players each posted two victories.
The Royals (5-0) completed a week that saw them win three times and drop just six matches combined in the three wins. They are halfway to posting their fourth straight season of double digits in victories with one more fall match and the entire spring season ahead.
Scranton received singles and doubles victories from senior Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South), junior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourds), sophomores Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and Anika Pornpitaksuk (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis), and freshman Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep).
Barron paired with Jakubek for an 8-1 victory at no. 3 doubles, then went out and rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at no. 5 singles while Jakubek didn't drop a single game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at no.4 singles. Machado and Pornpitaksuk strolled to an 8-3 win at no. 2 doubles, then Machado was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at no. 3 singles and Pornpitaksuk posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at no. 1 singles.
Frattaroli teamed with senior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) to earn an 8-2 win at no. 1 doubles, and later posted a 6-1, 6-0 win at no. 2 singles. The Royals also received a 6-3, 6-1 win at no. 6 singles from freshman Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg).
The Royals will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals in Geneva, N.Y. beginning on Friday, Sept. 25, and ending on Sunday, Sept. 27.
