The University of Scranton women's tennis team had no trouble in its season opener on Friday afternoon, downing crosstown rival Marywood, 9-0, at Royal Courts.
The Royals did not drop a set in singles play and lost only seven points in doubles en route to the victory. They received singles and doubles wins from junior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes), sophomore Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and freshmen Anika Pornpitaksuk (Flushing, N.Y./Francis Lewis) and Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep).
Machado and Pornpitaksuk teamed for an 8-4 win at no. 1 doubles, Pornpitaksuk rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at no. 1 singles in her first collegiate match, and Machado was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at no. 3 singles. Frattaroli and Jakubek paired for an 8-2 win at no. 2 doubles, Frattaroli posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 2 singles, and Jakubek was a 6-0, 6-4 winner at no. 4 singles.
The Royals also received a 6-1, 6-0 win at no. 5 singles from senior Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and a 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 6 singles from sophomore Kaitlin Barno (Peckville, Pa./Valley View), and an 8-1 win at no. 3 doubles from the team of junior Maura Tyrell (Chester, N.Y./Academy of St. Elizabeth) and freshman Elise Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg).
The Royals will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 13, when they take on Pratt Institute at 1 p.m. in Brooklyn, N.Y.
