The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team found itself in a tense, back-and-forth battle against Haverford in the Royals' home opener on Saturday at Fitzpatrick Field. In the end, Haverford came out on top on a free-position goal with four seconds remaining to hand Scranton an 11-10 defeat.
Scranton (1-1) tied the game with 1:47 left when senior midfielder Erin Allen (Syosset, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) scored from the point. The Royals then took possession off the draw, but could not convert. Haverford (1-0) made them pay by drawing a foul four seconds before the horn and converting the free position into the winning goal.
Allen and freshman attacker Katie Rogers (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led Scranton with two goals and two assists each. Rogers' two tallies came as part of a four-goal spurt that gave the Royals a 5-2 lead midway through the first half. Haverford eventually rallied to force a 6-6 tie at halftime.
Scranton also received two goals and an assist from junior midfielder Meghan Kerr (Warwick, N.Y./John S. Burke Catholic), a goal and an assist from sophomore attacker Morgan Windisch (Williston Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), and a goal from senior midfielder Fiona Keelan (New Rochelle, N.Y./Mamaroneck).
Sophomore midfielder Dana Siepietowski (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown Area) added an assist in the loss.
Haverford held a slim 27-23 lead in shots and committed 25 turnovers to Scranton's 22.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, March 2, when they travel to Annville, Pa. to take on Lebanon Valley at 7 p.m.
