ORLANDO, Fla. - The University of Scranton women's tennis team opened the Spring portion of their 2015-16 schedule on Friday afternoon in Orlando, Florida, as the Royals dropped a 7-2 decision to Springfield.
With the defeat, Scranton fell to 5-2 overall in matches on the season, while Springfield improved to 4-10 with the victory.
First in doubles, Scranton was able to collect one victory, getting on the board after the tandem of freshman Elyse Smilnak (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg) and senior Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) picked up a tough 9-7 victory at the number three spot.
Down 2-1 going into singles play, senior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) knotted the match up at 2-2 with an dominating 6-0, 6-0 win at number one singles.
But, the Royals were unable to collect another point the rest of the afternoon, despite putting up some good fights in several matches. At number two, sophomore Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) battled in a 6-4, 6-7 (1-7), 1-0 (11-9) loss, while freshman Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) did the same at number four singles (4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4).
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action tomorrow, continuing their trip in Orlando with a match against George Fox. Things get underway at 2 p.m.
