MADISON, N.J. – The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team flexed its defensive muscle on Saturday, holding Drew scoreless in three of four periods en route to the team's seventh straight victory, 10-2, at Ranger Stadium.
The Royals (7-1, 1-0 Landmark) allowed just 12 shots and forced 21 turnovers in the win. They led 4-0 after a period before the Rangers (1-4, 0-1 Landmark) scored twice in the second to pull within 4-2 at halftime. But Scranton pitched a second-half shutout, pulling away with three third-period goals.
Senior attackman Andrew Marone (Morristown, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) led Scranton with two goals and an assist, and senior midfielder Brad Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) and sophomore attackman Matt Carfaro (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) had a pair of goals each.
The Royals also received a goal each from senior midfielder Josh Kasman (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), senior defender Keith Vita (Melville, N.Y./St. Anthony's), sophomore midfielder Conor Carey (Long Beach, N.Y./Chaminade) and freshman attackman Matt Haemmerle (Hillsdale, N.J./Bergen Catholic). Senior midfielders Nick Mullery (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson), Nicholas Swift (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) and Alec Mikrut (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) each had assists.
The defense was led by Carey, who had three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Mullery added two caused turnovers and a ground ball, and Marone had three ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris) had five saves in the win.
The Royals will be back in action on Wednesday, March 23, when they travel to Lancaster, Pa. to take on Franklin & Marshall at 4 p.m.
