SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Back in Pennsylvania after a week-long trip to Florida for Spring Break a week ago, the University of Scranton women's tennis team returned to action this afternoon with a vengeance, opening Landmark Conference play for the season with a dominating 9-0 win over Susquehanna.
With the victory, Scranton moved to 6-5 overall on the year.
Things got off to a quick start for the Royals in doubles, as the tandem of senior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) and sophomore Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) rolled to an 8-1 win in the number one spot.
At number two, junior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) and freshman Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) grinded out a 8-6 win, while at number three, Scranton swept doubles with a dominating 8-0 win by senior Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg).
The dominance for Scranton continued in singles, with Scranton winning all six matches.
First, Walsh collected a 6-3, 6-1 win at number one, while Frattaroli had to bounce back from a 6-2 loss in the first set of her match at number one and forced a third set with a 6-2 win in the second set. In that final set, Frattaroli took a 10-8 decision to win the match.
At number three, Machado rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Jakubek was a 6-2, 6-2 victor at number four.
Scranton finished off the match with victories in the final two spots in singles, with Barron winning 6-3, 6-0 at number five, and junior Maura Tyrrell (Chester, N.Y./Academy of St. Elizabeth) won 6-2, 6-1 at number six to finish off the sweep for Scranton.
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, hosting Juniata in another Landmark Conference match. Action gets underway at Royal Courts at 1 p.m.
