The University of Scranton men's tennis team dropped a pair of matches on the road in Landmark Conference play this weekend, losing at Goucher on Saturday night, 8-1, then dropping a heartbreaker at Catholic on Sunday, 5-4.
With the losses, the Royals are now 1-8 overall, 0-2 in the Landmark Conference.
Against Catholic on Sunday, Scranton got off to a fast start in doubles play, taking two of the three matches contested.
At number two doubles, the tandem of junior's Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) and Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) grabbed an 8-3 win, then senior Kevin Murphy (Greenbelt, Md./Gonzaga College High School) and freshman Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) gave the Royals a 2-1 lead entering singles play with an 8-6 victory at number three doubles.
However, in singles play, Catholic took four of the six matches contested to pull out the victory, as the Cardinals were able to win two matches in three sets to take the win.
Scranton did collect wins at number five and six singles, as freshman Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn,./New Fairfield) was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at number five, while freshman Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) took a 6-3, 6-0 win in the six spot.
Against Goucher, Swope was the lone Royal to earn a point, as he captured a 6-1, 6-2 victory there in the sixth position in singles action.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday, taking on Summit at Royal Courts. Things get underway at 4 p.m.
