The University of Scranton women's tennis team hit the road this weekend and made the most of a trip to Landmark Conference foes Goucher and Catholic, as the Royals collected a pair of victories, beating Goucher, 9-0, on Saturday night, then besting Catholic, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon.

With the victories, Scranton improved to 8-5 overall and 3-0 in the Landmark Conference.

On Sunday, Scranton got off to a fast start in doubles play, sweeping Catholic to take an early 3-0 lead.

At number one, senior Emily Walsh (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) and sophomore Julia Frattaroli (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) continued their winning ways as a team, taking an 8-3 win.

In the number two position in doubles, junior Emily Machado (Fishkill, N.Y./Out Lady of Lourdes) and freshman Emilia Jakubek (Honesdale, Pa./Scranton Prep) pulled out a 9-8 (10-7) win on a tiebreak, while at number three, senior Courtney Barron (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) and freshman Elyse Smilnak (Holidaysburg, Pa./Holidaysburg) completed the sweep of doubles for the Royals with an 8-6 win.

In singles, Scranton and Catholic split six matches, which was enough for the Royals to clinch a three-point victory.

At number one, Walsh finished off a banner weekend with a straight set 6-1, 6-0 win. Frattaroli was just as dominant at number two singles, taking a 6-4, 6-2 victory, while Barron was the other Royal to record a win in singles, taking a thriller in three sets at number five (6-2, 2-6, 11-9) to finish off the victory for Scranton.

Before heading to Catholic, Scranton first played Goucher indoors on Saturday night and absolutely dominated the Gophers in a shutout victory, their second straight to start Landmark Conference play for the Spring.

At doubles, the same three doubles teams that won at Catholic collected victories, while Walsh and Frattaroli won in the first and second positions in singles in straight sets.

Barron was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at number five at Goucher, while Machado won her match at number three (6-0, 6-2) and Jakubek took a 6-0, 6-2 at number four singles.

Scranton completed the sweep of Goucher on Saturday night when Smilnak captured a 6-1, 6-2 win at number six singles to finish off a dominating performance for the Royals on the night.

The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, April 17, when they host Moravian in another Landmark Conference contest, this time at Royal Courts. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
