SCRANTON, Pa. - It was a clean sweep for the University of Scranton men's tennis team on Tuesday afternoon, as the Royals shutout visiting Summit in non-conference action, 9-0, in their first match of the year at Royal Courts.
With the win, Scranton improved to 2-8 overall for the year.
In the victory, Scranton got off to a fast start in double play, sweeping three matches to take an early 3-0 lead on Summit.
First in the top position in doubles action, juniors Michael Pottieger (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) and Matt Prendergast (Flanders, N.J./Mt. Olive) collected an 8-2 win, then next at number two doubles, senior Kevin Murphy (Greenbelt, Md./Gonzaga College High School) and freshman Christian Aksu (Exton, Pa./West Chester East) posted an 8-0 shutout win.
Finally at number three doubles, senior Michael O'Malley (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) and freshman Austin Manmiller (Shoemakersville, Pa./Hamburg Area) recorded an 8-2 victory to complete the shutout of doubles for the Royals.
Next up in singles play, Scranton was just as dominant, as all but one match out of six was won in straight sets by a Royal.
First at number one, freshman Alexander Ochalski (Hopewell, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) was a 6-0, retired winner, which was followed by a thrilling win by sophomore Keller McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) at number two in the lineup, in which he took a 6-2, 0-6, 10-2 victory.
At number three singles, junior David Commender (Larchmont, N.Y./Iona Prep) posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win, while freshman Brian Harkins (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) was a 6-2, 6-2 victor in the number four spot in singles.
At number five, freshman Charles Swope (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) won his fourth straight match overall (6-0, 6-0) and finally at number six in singles, sophomore Massimo DeCarvalho (Forest Hills, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) finished off the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Marywood in another non-conference match at Royal Courts. Action gets underway at 4 p.m.
